Local and Regional Actions

Many of the threats faced by fish, sharks and rays in SA waters can be reduced through appropriate actions at the regional and local levels. These actions can be undertaken and/or supported by Natural Resources Management (NRM) Boards, local government, community groups and individuals. This paper provides a summary of actions available at the regional and local levels in relation to the following threats:

• Pollution -

  • Nutrients and sediment;
  • Toxic chemicals; and
  • Marine debris;

• Coastal development;

• Tourism and Recreation –

  • Tourism;
  • Recreational fishing;
  • Boating; and
  • Shark control programs;

• Pest species and disease;

• Climate change; and

• Lack of Knowledge.

State and National Actions

This paper provides a summary of actions that can be taken at the national and state levels to protect SA’s fish, sharks and rays. The actions covered are:

• legislative protection;

  • Commonwealth legislation
  • State legislation

• inclusion of at risk species on non-government organisation’s (NGO) threatened species listings;

• contributing to planning and policy development processes;

• improved management of industries and infrastructure that impact on the marine environment;

  • shipping;
  • commercial fishing;
  • aquaculture
  • mining and exploration;
  • power generation; and
  • desalination plants;

• reducing the impacts of climate change; and

• increased research.
