Youth Environment Council Sustainability Forum

YEC_workshops_200More than 100 primary and secondary students from 26 schools throughout South Australia recently attended the Youth Environment Council Sustainability Forum to learn, share and be inspired about sustainability.

Students came as far as Kangaroo Island, Mt Gambier, Waikerie, Murray Bridge, Victor Harbor and Yorke Peninsula to be part of the forum.

Conservation SA delivered sessions on how to engage with politicians. "We were keen to be a part of this day as young people are a vital part of a sustainable future". Said Dominic Nicholls, from Conservation SA. "They have a right to input into the legacy that we create for them"

Year 10 student Kaitlin Taylor from Kangaroo Island said, "I came to the forum to learn more about the environment and ways to get involved."

YEC Project Coordinator Pippa Cattanach said, "The forum included a range of workshops to give students the skills and knowledge to run environmental action projects in their local school communities."

Workshop topics included support and resources available, project planning skills, grant writing and fundraising, promotion, community links and staying connected across the State.

Aidan Hammond, Yr 6 student from Victor Harbor Primary School said, "The Forum was lots of fun and I met lots of like-minded people from other schools."

"I now have lots of ideas for environmental projects to start up at my school."

The Youth Environment Council aims to reconvene in July for an online sharing day and again in September to celebrate the school's  sustainability achievements throughout the year.

The Youth Environment Council is a joint initiative of the Department of Education and Children's Services and the Adelaide and Mount Lofty Ranges Natural Resources Management Board.
