SA pollies unite for a healthy Murray Darling

The Conservation Council of SA congratulates and supports all the 23 South Australian Federal Members of Parliament who signed the Murray-Darling pledge organised by the Australian Conservation Foundation.

These 23 MPs have signed on to a pledge to support returning water to a level that protects the health of the Murray-Darling river system.

Conservation Council of SA CE Tim Kelly said: "The Murray-Darling Basin needs a good outcome based on good science."

"This river is the lifeblood of our state. For too long SA has borne the brunt of over-extraction throughout the Basin. Two million tonnes of salt and other pollutants land in SA, with serious effects on our environment, economy and communities."

"We need water flows to get the Basin's salt out through the Murray Mouth, otherwise it will continue to bank up, polluting Adelaide's drinking water and ultimately damaging the whole river system.

"If we do not work now for a healthy river this state will lose much more than biodiversity."

"Getting these MPs signing on to this pledge is a step in the right direction; the next step is to make sure the message is heard in Canberra. We need action that secures the future of the Murray River for all communities," said Tim.
