MEDIA RELEASE
The State's peak environmental body the Conservation Council of SA (CCSA) has supported the decision of the Adelaide City Council to maintain the integrity of the Parklands.
"CCSA Congratulates the City Council for its wise decision to refuse the lease for the Grand stand," stated Jasemin Rose, Chair of CCSA's Planning Working Group. "The new City Council obviously understands the importance and value of the Parklands and is displaying the same foresight that Col Light showed years ago."
"The Parklands are not free land waiting to be developed, they are priceless and one of South Australia's greatest assets," said Rose.
"True to its pre-election commitments, members of Adelaide City Council have represented the people of Adelaide and made their decision on that basis; this opinion is widely held by the people of South Australia," said Rose. "We urge the State Government not to legislate to override the decision and to respect the decision of the duly elected Council."
"The proposed grandstand would have reduced public accessibility, brought intensification of use and further threatened the environmental, visual and heritage values of the Parklands," said Ms Rose, "CCSA thanks the City council for protecting the Parklands for South Australia and posterity."
