Fisheries

Australian fisheries have many environmental impacts, from impacts on the population of the target species, impacts on species caught as bycatch, to habitat and broad scale ecosystem impacts.  CCSA has continued our constructive approach to ensure these issues are at the forefront of discussions. CCSA has maintained its increased engagement in fisheries issues this year, attending as many meetings as we could to ensure conservation concerns were raised.  CCSA also met with fishing interests (commercial and recreational) and government departments, and contributed to improved environmental outcomes on a number of issues, including:

  • Working to achieve better protection for Australian sea lions, and dolphins from unsustainable levels of bycatch in the gillnets of the shark fishery
  • Conservation representative on Spencer Gulf Prawn fishery research sub-committee
  • Conservation representative on Lakes and Coorong Fishery consultative committee
  • PIRSA recreational fishing bag and boat limit review
  • PIRSA recreational fishing possession limit discussions
  • CSIRO/DENR/SARDI great white shark cage diving review
  • PIRSA ecological risk assessment workshops(multiple fisheries)
  • Murray Cod management options
  • Snapper management options
  • Fishing gear definitions review
