Key role of Member Group:

To represent the interests of the conservation of wild native birds in South Australia as set out in the Aims of Birds SA :

  • 1. To promote the conservation of Australian birds and their habitats
  • 2. To encourage interest in, and develop knowledge of the birds of South Australia
  • 3. To record the results of research in regard to all aspects of bird life
  • 4. To maintain a public fund called the "Birds SA Conservation Fund" for the specific purpose of supporting the Association's environmental objectives.

Key Achievements and Activities for 2008/09:

  • Bird SA has provided informed submissions to the various proponents, planning agents and Government instrumentalities on a range of issues as they affect bird habitat.
  • Birds SA has sponsored a research activity into the status and conservation of bird species in South Australia
  • Members of Birds SA have provided key field information on a National shorebird and migratory wader monitoring activity.

Identify three key environmental issues impacting on South Australia:

1. The planned expansion of urban development in the Adelaide region into areas adjacent to and incorporating sensitive bird habitats

2.  The expansion of the Olympic Dam Mine to create large areas of habitat potentially lethal to birds.

3.  Loss of habitat in South Australia as a result of the lack of environmental flows in the River Murray and the Lower Lakes
