Key role of Member Group:
To promote the study of, and interest in, natural history and to promote the establishment of reserves for the preservation of our native fauna and flora.
Key Achievements and Activities for 2008/9:
- To celebrate 125 years, through several activities bringing present and past members together.
- To manage four FNSSA heritage-listed reserves and to monitor their biodiversity.
- To provide grants to researchers undertaking research into the biota and natural environment of South Australia via the Lirabenda Endowment Fund.
- To undertake and assist field surveys, excursions and studies to record the biodiversity occurring at South Australian locations though various FNSSA clubs and networks with like-minded non-government organisations.
- To sponsor and support the Adelaide Junior Naturalists and Bellevue Heights Junior Naturalists and undertake shared activities on occasions.
- To provide The SA Naturalist as a journal where scientific papers and information can be published.
- To monitor environmental issues.
- To provide informative website information.
Identify three key environmental issues impacting on South Australia:
- 1. Loss of remnant native vegetation and decline of native fauna species due to rise of introduced species, increasing SA population, urban development, infrastructure, diminishing natural resources and loss of ecosystems through fragmentation of habitats.
- 2. The effect Climate Change will have on South Australia's biodiversity.
- 3. The potential impacts from likely increased mining and recreational activities in the Protected Area Reserve Systems.
