Key role of Member Group:

Protection of endangered Australian species and prevention of further extinctions

The top three (3) South Australian environmental issues concerning the group:

  • 1. Biodiversity
  • 2. Habitat protection and restoration
  • 3. Direct protection of vulnerable species at risk

Key achievements for 2009-10:

  • Assistance in expanding the population of Western Barred Bandicoots at the Arid Recovery Zone, SA.
  • Providing support for the recovery of the endangered Yarra Pygmy Perch in south eastern SA.
  • Providing support for the production of a study "Persistence of endangered species" the results of which suggest that where dingos are abundant and socially stable, invasive meso-predators and herbivores decrease and biodiversity and productivity increases.

Key campaign or advocacy activities currently being undertaken:

  • Providing support for the establishment of an insurance population of endangered Tasmanian Devils on mainland Australia.
  • Partnership with Mt Rothwell Sanctuary in Victoria for restoration of endangered grassland habitats and associated wildlife, including the Eastern Barred Bandicoot and Brush-tailed Rock Wallaby.
  • Providing support for a project to control the impact of cane toads on the southern invasion front.
