Key role of Member Group:

Greening Australia is passionate about protecting and restoring the health, diversity and productivity of our unique Australian landscapes.

Our vision:  A healthy, diverse and productive environment treasured by the whole community.
Our mission:  To engage the community in vegetation management to protect and restore the health, diversity and productivity of our unique Australian landscapes.

Key Achievements and Activities for 2008/09:

Loss of habitat is the biggest single threat to Australian plants and animals. We have seen extensive species loss and environmental degradation over the last 200 years. Our aim is to develop significant, landscape scale restoration projects across Australia, providing places of refuge that will address this loss and reverse it.

Each of our projects has a bold vision and great reach across landscapes and communities. Involving a large number of partners and audiences, from major corporations to individual volunteers, our projects demonstrate what can be achieved when the community works together to manage our unique landscape on an unprecedented scale.

  • Habitat 141 is a 50 year visionary initiative to restore and reconnect the iconic landscapes that straddle the South Australian and Victorian Border. Stretching for more than 500km from the NSW rangeland, down through the SA and Victorian Mallee to the Southern Ocean, Habitat 141 aims to address challenges such as climate change and biodiversity loss.
  • The majestic Flinders Ranges provide key habitat for threatened species such as the Yellow-footed Rock Wallaby and Spiny Daisy. Stretching from Crystal Brook in the south to Hawker in the north, the Flinders program provides a major contribution to conservation in the region. Working closely with our allies the Northern and Yorke NRM Board, The Wilderness Society and State government agencies, Greening Australia aims to protect and conserve the biodiversity of the Flinders Ranges.
  • Located in the Southern Mt Lofty Ranges, our main office is home to over 30 staff who have delivered significant environmental restoration to the Fleurieu and Mt Lofty Ranges region over the last 25 years. Our aim now is to develop a major Fleurieu BioLink program that will connect and build on our work, and the work of others, in this region helping to preserve SA's natural environment for future generations to enjoy.
  • Recognised as being a key biodiversity area, WildEyre features more than 300km of spectacular coastline made up of tall rocky cliffs, large sand dunes, sweeping sandy beaches and sheltered bays. These areas are important conservation assets which are home to numerous threatened species including shorebirds, ospreys and sea lions. Inland areas feature significant stands of different Mallee communities as well as native pine, sheoak and grasslands. By adopting a landscape scale restoration approach, WildEyre maximises our chances of addressing the impacts of biodiversity loss associated with climate change.

Identify three key environmental issues impacting on South Australia:

1. Biodiversity loss and habitat degradation

2. Lack of water

3. Pest species
