Key role of Member Group:

The Toyota Landcruiser Club is a family oriented group that promotes responsible four-wheel driving as a legitimate recreation.  Primary objectives of the Club are to train members to a high level of competency in vehicle handling, in encouraging proper maintenance of vehicles, and in providing a strong example for other four-wheel users for respecting the environment through which they travel.

The Club's Constitution includes a range of requirements particularly aimed at preventing environmental damage through improper use of vehicles.  The Club's Environment Officer is responsible for maintaining an awareness and providing advice among members on aspects of driving, setting up camp, lighting comfort or cooking fires, removal of waste, avoiding air and water pollution, and other activities in which outdoor travellers are involved.

Many Club members are active in Friends of National Parks Groups around the State, especially in remote and arid regions where their vehicles enable access to project sites.                                                                The Environment Officer also arranges for members to participate in community based environmentally focused activities such as clean-ups, propagation of seeds and fencing off sand dunes to prevent vehicle access.  The Officer also initiates environmental projects for Club members that have included bulk tree plantings, restoration and maintenance of a heritage site, and eradication of feral plants from areas difficult to access.

Nationally accredited driver training is considered vital towards minimising vehicle impact on environmentally sensitive areas of the State.  Almost 10% of Club members have qualified as driving assessor/instructors, while a high percentage of members have completed driver training courses.  Technical education also plays a major role in reducing potential environmental impacts by having tyres, engines, exhaust systems and other components functioning to a standard that prevents or mitigates ground surface damage, water and air pollution, and disturbance of fauna and flora.

The Toyota Landcruiser Club in South Australia works at being part of the solution rather than part of the problem in the important matter of preserving the environment we share.

Identify three key environmental issues impacting on South Australia:

1.  Lack of water flow in the River Murray, southern lakes and Coorong

2.  Encroachment of building development on marine environments in regional areas

3.  Loss of flora in northern and remote areas of the State due to drought
