Key Role of Member Group:

ERA is a non-party-political organisation, formed in 1993 as a union of the Economics Review Association and other economic reform groups. Its long-term goal is to achieve a socially, environmentally and financially sustainable economic system.  ERA's commitment to economic sovereignty seeks to return control of the economic and financial system to the people.  This requires full public scrutiny and accountability for all economic processes and a recognition that economic systems must serve the people for the global good.

Key Achievements and Activities for 2007/8:

Some active ERA members are spending time talking within the group concerning the type of policy proposals they would like to see promoted in relation to Australia's economic future, ie. what they are and why they are considered relevant, important and necessary.

With the winds of change blowing at gale force, we are being presented with a time in which we can help bring about constructive changes in society.  We are endeavouring to be in the vanguard of constructive thinking and trying to make sure that we have something valid to offer and promote.  The public's ear is showing signs of wanting to hear more of the realities of the marketplace.  It does not want its good new wine put back into dirty old soiled containers.

The thrust of our endeavours is mainly educational.  Our regular newsletter and selected extra articles are trying to bring some sanity to free-market madness and to academia which in some disciplines has exchanged intelligence for contrived ignorance and vested interests' corruption. The human mind is programmed with information from a variety of sources, all of which contribute to determining the outlook, attitudes, prejudices, beliefs and behaviour of each individual.  We only too readily impute blame for past human follies to the brainwashing of the masses by opportunist leaders of church and state whilst at the same time we are consenting victims ourselves to the greatest deceptions and injustices ever foisted on human beings.  In the worship of mammon's greed and lust for self-centred power, irresponsible advertising, seductive propaganda and malicious usurious monopolizing of purchasing power credit and the mass media threaten to envelop us in a social anarchy, the like of which would make the Dawn Ages of European History look immaculate by comparison.

Identify three Key Environmental Issues impacting on South Australia:

  1. The most important change in recent times has been the enormous growth of one subsystem of the Earth, namely the economy, relative to the total system, the ecosphere.
  2. The growth economy is failing.  In other words, the quantitative expansion of the economic system increases environmental and social costs faster than production benefits, making us poorer not richer.
  3. If expansion is to be mainly for the sake of the poor it must be comprised of good the poor need - clothing, shelter, and food on the plate, not ten thousand recipes on the Internet.
