Tonight the Conservation Council of South Australia will announce Peter Owen, Campaign Manager at the Wilderness Society SA, as the winner of the Jill Hudson Award for Environmental Protection.
The awards will be presented by Professor Rob Morrison OAM at a ceremony held tonight at Tandayna from 6:00pm.
The Australian Youth Climate Coalition (AYCC) SA will win the Young Achiever Award and David Gill, Secretary of Friends of the Willunga Basin and Adrian Shackley of Gawler Environment and Heritage Association will be winners of an Unsung Hero Award.
The Jill Hudson Award recognises South Australians who have made outstanding contributions to environmental protection over the past 12 months, and faced significant challenges doing so.
Tim Kelly, Conservation Council SA Chief Executive said, "We had many very strong nominees this year, including journalist Bryan Littlely, scientist Professor Jochen Kaempf and Mt Barker community leader Dianne van Eck."
"The work of these individuals and groups is so important for the environment and our communities but it often goes unrecognised. We are delighted to showcase what South Australian environmental champions are achieving through these awards."
Peter Owen is being recognised for his and his team's instrumental work in the protection of vast areas of land and seascape in South Australia. Notable achievements include protection of over a million hectares of the Nullarbor Plain, proclamation of the Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary which will now be safe from mining activity, and tireless work to achieve adequate marine protection for South Australian waters.
The AYCC SA is recognised for its work to build a generation-wide movement to solve the climate crisis. Through its events, campaigns and work in schools, the Coalition is empowering a new generation to deal with climate change.
David Gill's Unsung Hero Award recognises his work as the Secretary of Friends of Willunga Basin to protect the special environmental, heritage and productive qualities of the Willunga Basin. Adrian Shackley receives an Unsung Hero Award for his work as a founding member of the Gawler Environment and Heritage Association and many volunteer projects to protect the local Gawler environment.
