CCSA wants to see non-government organisations (NGOs) better engaged in natural resource management (NRM). In February 2009 we completed research on NGO engagement with NRM Boards in SA with a report called “NGO Engagement in SA NRM Regional Processes”. CCSA took on the challenge as a Peak body recognised under the state NRM Act 2004. Since then the key points from the research have been presented to the CCSA Council, The Minister for Environment & Heritage, the CE of DWLBC and the NRM Council. The findings identified that there can be significant barriers for conservation groups fully engaging in NRM processes. This is a loss for both the groups and statutory bodies, both of whom are committed to preserving our environment. The research also showed that there was a need to facilitate more robust and effective partnerships between NGOs and NRM Boards. Strong and effective partnerships are essential to effective Natural Resource Management (NRM), with the community recognised as key partners under State NRM legislation. Environmental NGOs not only provide NRM outcomes but reach tens of thousands of South Australians and thus have the potential to facilitate community engagement by Regional NRM Boards.
This research was launched at the CCSA conference ‘Connecting Community Conservation’ held 25-27 June.
