1. Conservation Council of SA Notices
1.1 Happy 2012 and welcome to the first Conservation Council SA E-bulletin for the year
Already the Conservation Council, our member groups and friends are tackling some thorny environmental challenges.
On the Draft Murray Darling Basin Plan, concerns raised in December 2011 have been confirmed by the Wentworth Group of Concerned Scientists, who now say that it lacks the basic information needed to manage the river, won't meet the Authority's own environmental targets and in some places is actively misleading. Now is the time to write and send in submissions to call for a Plan that delivers a healthy working river based on science. Essential elements include enough flow to flush 2 million tonnes of salt to sea annually, to protect the Coorong and Lower Lakes, to maintain water quality for all users and to provide a system resilient to drought and climate change.
Other activities we are undertaking include:
- Continued progress on our Green our Grid Campaign
- Building on common ground with other stakeholders for effective marine sanctuaries in SA
- Responding to changes to the Significant Tree and Regulated Tree rules
- Working to improve recognition that communities are at the centre of Natural Resource Management delivery and gain better support for their efforts.
- Ongoing delivery of our recovery programs, Reefwatch and Green Hubs sustainability program
- Calling for reform of the planning system
- Contributions on climate change policy, clarifying greenhouse impacts of the gas industry and working on national issues with other state and territory Conservation Councils.
For more info on our work, keep an eye on our website or Facebook and Twitter pages.
I look forward to an exciting year and working collaboratively with our members and supporters.
Kind regards
Tim Kelly

The ACNC Taskforce will engage with the Not-for-Profit sector in an open and collaborative manner on key elements of the establishment and operation of the ACNC as the national regulator.
Treasury is responsible for policy and legislation with respect to regulation and taxation of the NFP sector including:
- Developing legislation for the ACNC.
- Developing legislation for a statutory definition of "charity".
- Reviewing fundraising legislation and 'Companies Limited by Guarantee' (as it relates to charities).
- Implementing reforms to better target NFP tax concessions.
- Restating the 'In Australia' special conditions and implementing reforms relating to public ancillary funds
The Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission Taskforce (ACNCT) is holding a series of public meetings in all Australian capital cities to hear views on the design and implementation of the new charity regulator.
