Review of SA Climate Change Legislation

We provided the following comments in our submission:

  • We support increasing the 2050 target to 80% emission reductions.
  • We need a target to reduce emissions by 40-50% by 2020 to drive action straight away, and a greenhouse reduction pathway to ensure we continue reducing emissions every year.
  • The 33% renewable generation target by 2020 should be increased to at least 40%-50% (as government-commissioned studies have shown to be entirely feasible).
  • We support the low emissions intensity standard to rule out any new coal power, but it should be based on life-cycle emissions, not simply those released at the point of combustion.
  • New gas plants should only be approved if they are coupled with equal size renewable projects (gas should facilitate the transition to 100% renewables, not delay it).
  • The Commonwealth Government's Clean Energy Future Plan and carbon pricing mechanism provides no cause for abandoning or watering down targets, actions and programs that can deliver tangible greenhouse gas emission reductions in South Australia.
