Nuclear Update - 9 August 2018

Radioactive Waste Webinar

The communities of Kimba and the Flinders Ranges have been calling for a forum presenting all sides of the argument about a radioactive waste facility in their region. Throughout the site selection process, there have been several forums run by the government, however only their side has ever been presented.
Rather than having a forum in the affected communities, the Department of Industry, Innovation and Science (DIIS) is holding a webinar this Friday, this time including panel members who oppose the current proposal.
When: Friday 10 August
Time: 12.30-2.30pm (ACST)
Panel members include:
• Dave Sweeney, Australian Conservation Foundation
• Dr Margaret Beavis, Medical Association for the Prevention of War
• Scott Ludlam, Former Greens Senator
• Dr Jim Green, Friends of the Earth
• Dr Adi Paterson, ANSTO
• Dr Geoff Currie, Charles Start University
• Dr Ben Heard, Bright New World
• Bruce Wilson, DIIS

Send a submission to the Department of Industry, Innovation and Science (DIIS)

The Department is calling for submissions about the proposed National Radioactive Waste Management Facility in Kimba or the Flinders Ranges and says these will be "one of the factors the Minister for Resources and Northern Australia may take into account when determining broad community support for the Facility."

Minister Canavan is hoping to select a site in October – if you or others who are interested are not eligible to vote in the community you are still able to make a comment and express your view.

The DIIS webpage does not mention what issues submissions should address, but it is important that people have their say, however brief. You can find some helpful points here.

Submissions can be made by:

Email: [email protected]

Toll free number: 13 28 46

Post: The Department of Industry, Innovation and Science
National Radioactive Waste Section
GPO Box 2013, Canberra ACT 2601

The Department will be accepting submissions until 24 September 2018.

If you have done a previous submission or comment prior to 1 August 2018 you can contact the Department and let them know that you wish that to be taken as your view. Please note that these submissions are not the same as those made to the Senate Inquiry.

Sign the petition to the Minister: No nuclear waste in SA!

Communities of the Flinders Ranges and Kimba on the Eyre Peninsula are working hard to make sure the decision makers hear a clear no — and we want them to hear from you too!

We've started a postcard petition that will be delivered to Minister Canavan later this year. Please go online to sign the online postcard or pick up a bundle to distribute from The Joinery, 111 Franklin Street, Adelaide.
