SA climate leadership welcomed

The Conservation Council SA has welcomed the signing of two international climate change agreements by the State Government and Adelaide City Council, the Compact of States and Regions and the Compact of Mayors.

Conservation SA Chief Executive Craig Wilkins said: “We strongly welcome the signing of these compacts. South Australia has a proud history of leadership on climate change action and it’s vitally important that this continues.

“This is a critical year, with the Paris talks in December and the Federal Government retreating from meaningful action.

“It is encouraging for us to remember that regional levels of government can achieve significant emission reductions when this is not happening at the national level, and we hope this collaborative approach will facilitate similar progress by other regional governments.

“We look forward to seeing how these agreements translate into action on the ground in South Australia.

“For them to be more than just words on a paper, it is essential that the community, and particularly the residents and businesses of Adelaide and North Adelaide can be inspired and assisted to contribute,” Mr Wilkins concluded.
