Unbalanced Terms of Reference threaten Nuke Royal Commission credibility

It is essential the proposed Royal Commission into nuclear reactors and dumping examines all aspects of this industry and doesn't cherry pick a one-sided agenda, says the state's peak environment body, the Conservation Council of SA.

"Those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it.  How can an inquiry looking into the nuclear chain ignore our state's previous and current involvement, including the mining and transport of uranium, and contaminated sites like Maralinga?" said Conservation SA Chief Executive Craig Wilkins.

"Also, there needs to be a clear-eyed examination of the costs, particularly the level of public subsidies required.  Unlike renewables, which are getting cheaper and cheaper each year, the cost of nuclear power continues to rise.  And what will be the cost to other industries like wine and tourism if we are to become the world's nuclear waste dump?"
