Santos is Australia’s second largest gas company. Gas is a dirty fossil fuel, and a key driver of the climate crisis. Santos is steamrolling ahead with THREE massive new gas expansions and they’re able to push ahead with these plans because they wield immense political influence in South Australia through sponsorships, promotion and advertising within our local institutions. Adelaide University has the Santos Petroleum Engineering Building and the Santos lecture theatre. As University staff and students we call on our Vice Chancellor Nicola Phillips to remove/change this Santos signage, to reflect the university’s ongoing commitment to sustainable green transitions.

Institutions across Australia are moving away from fossil fuel promotion, sponsorship and advertising including Monash University, ACT schools, Tennis Australia, Cricket Australia, Darwin Festival and many more. Santos is headquartered in the Adelaide CBD, and they use sponsorships, naming rights and advertising to greenwash their dirty gas expansion plans. In some cases gas can be worse than coal, and in order to meet our net zero targets we cannot open up any new coal or gas projects. As Adelaide University students we need to ensure that fossil fuel companies are not getting a free ride or promotion. We need to be clear on our stance regarding fossil fuels and their major contributions to the climate crisis.

Call on Adelaide Uni Vice Chancellor to remove Santos naming from Campus facilities!
