South Australia has confirmed its first detections of H5N1 high pathogenicity avian influenza (H5 bird flu).
Conservation Council SA has joined the Harmful Algal Bloom Reference Group to push for a response that puts nature and resilience at the heart of recovery. We are continually advocating for more comprehensive and appropriately resourced monitoring, response and future proofing.
We welcome the state government’s current preparedness efforts, but the true key to success lies in a structured partnership with the environment sector, local government and the broader community. If we combine government resources with the thousands of community eyes we have on the ground, we can ensure South Australia is ready to face this threat head-on.
Conservation SA, together with Birds SA and BirdLife Australia, has partnered with the State Government to deliver a new nation-leading training program that will empower the birding and conservation community to formally contribute to South Australia's H5 bird flu response.
The training program has been co-designed with the three groups, combining the abundance of local expertise their members hold about wildlife in the coastal and wetland systems with current response plans.
