Sustenance meets sustainability at the Depot Collective Café 

Delicious food, amazing coffee and sustainability all roll into one at the Depot Collective Café, located at The Joinery - the old Adelaide bus station given a new lease on life.

The Depot Collective Café became part of The Joinery family in March this year when it opened its doors and began serving up breakfast and lunch from a menu that aims to reduce your environmental footprint.

Even serving ethically sourced coffee, the café fits in perfectly with other social, environmental and community organisations – including Conservation SA and the Adelaide Sustainability Centre - that call The Joinery home. 

Right from the word go, the Depot Collective Café has had a focus on being sustainable.    

“From the recycled fit-out to the items of the menu, we have applied an eco-centric approach,” says café owner Maddie Harris.

“We source our fresh food locally and seasonally, we sort our waste to maximise recycling and organic waste to minimise landfill, and we have implemented a low-energy cooking set-up that uses no gas,” she says.

Maddie believes it’s important to be sustainable.

“It is clear that we are way beyond our 'carrying capacity' in our environment and the consequences are starting to seriously show,” she says.

“We have the information and responsibility to address this for the sake of our future.”

But what’s been the best part of running the café so far? 

 “The mix of customers we are getting through the door and the positive response from them, as well as the opportunities to be involved in the different elements and events going on in The Joinery.”

Maddie says she enjoys being part of The Joinery community. 

“It’s really nice being part of a bigger group and feeling the community vibe here at The Joinery,” she says.
